The fundraiser was founded by a group of 2019 debut novelists led by Kris Waldherr, whose debut, THE LOST HISTORY OF DREAMS, launches in April 2019. The group has since snowballed to include established authors, editors, and literary agents and is currently under the direction of a fellow 2019 debut author Sarah J. Sover. “The website was born out of the idea that creatives might be able to contribute to family reunification in a unique and effective way,” says Waldherr after noting a common feeling among the several online debut author communities. “We realized that as published authors, we have items writers and readers may want. Auctioning these as a fundraiser simply seemed like the right thing to do.”
The January auction includes more than fifty listings ranging from rare signed copies of soon-to-publish books to query letter and manuscript critiques as well as more specialized offerings. “We are overwhelmed by the positive reception this initiative has received,” says Sover, who plans to make the auction a quarterly happening. “This is our way of taking action, of showing support to the organizations combating horrific wrongs at our borders. The response from the writing community gives us hope.”
