I am an avid reader and writer. My favorite books to both read and write are high fantasy, paranormal, and urban fantasy. I have a huge soft spot for YA and NA, but also usually in those fantasy-type categories. Regular, plain old young adulthood wasn't so magical, so I figure why not add some oomph? Some of my favorite authors are Brandon Sanderson, L.J. Smith, and JRR Tolkein. For middle grade, I think Diana Wynn Jones and Susan Cooper are just brilliant. I am a mommy to two fun, adorable and crazy-making boys who keep my hands quite full. I am a wife. I am also a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) coach and curriculum writer in the New York public school system. If someone has a really obscure bit of science trivia that they are curious about, that only a real, true nerd would know the answer to, they usually come to me. And I'm not gonna lie...I'm proud of that. I love to step into fantasy worlds during my down time. I have always been a reader and writer. I have published several articles and short stories. My first novel, "The Human Cure" was published by 48fourteen publishing several years ago, and reformatted and rereleased in print in November of 2014.

The Wicked King

(The Folk of the Air #2)

by

You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.

The first lesson is to make yourself strong.

After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

My Review
Ah, Holly Black…. how I love your worlds! I’ve been waiting for this one for a long time, because I’ve been feeling a lot of withdrawal from Holly’s rich words, revels, and debauchery. She paints a vivid image of magic rules, unearthly figures of terror and beauty, and most importantly, the complexity of human emotions entangled among the cruelty of immortals.
Jude isn’t my favorite of Holly’s characters, if only because, just like the warrior girl herself, I need her to be soft when she cannot be soft. Her stubbornness and inability to trust became a hindrance to some of the relationships I needed to see in this book. My other request – more Cardan!!!! The subtleties of his rich, complex character were wasted on cameos.
I’m hoping for Cardan to become the major player he deserves to be in the third book. Yikes….the wait!!!

Red compound makes them angry. Yellow exhausts them. Blue drives them into a state of ravenous addiction. The thief Kai knows about the chemically controlled soldiers of the Eastern forces and their savage, deadly nature. When a robbery attempt at Club Seven goes wrong, Kai is captured by a handler and his bestial soldier-boy. She wakes up inside the military base with no idea what happened to her twin brother, Dex.

Things go from bad to worse when Kai is started on a drug and training regimen, and forced to take injections of blue compound. The scientists in charge plan to make her into a working soldier who will mine the mysterious power crystals beneath the desert. Kai becomes a victim of the bully Finn, a handsome but nasty soldier whose years on red compound seem to have erased his humanity. Still, she begins to pity the Seven Soldiers, including the monstrous boy who tried to rip her to shreds at the club. They appear to be nothing more than genetically enhanced, drug-controlled teenagers.

On the outside, Dex and his tech-savvy boyfriend try to crack the soldiers’ chemical code to find a weakness that will break the system. But Kai has already been drawn deep into her new world. Strong feelings for the soldiers she’s come to know have started to cloud her judgment. Can she escape and find Dex without becoming a monster herself?
