Review – Cal Leandros Series by Rob Thurman

cal leandros cover

There are monsters among us. There always have been and there always will be. I’ve known that since I can remember, just like I’ve always known I was one … Well, half of one, anyway.

Welcome to New York City – a troll under the Brooklyn Bridge, a boggle in Central Park, and a beautiful vampire in a penthouse on the Upper East Side. Most humans are oblivious to the preternatural nightlife around them, but Cal Leandros is only half human.

His father’s dark lineage is the stuff of nightmares – and his entire otherworldly elf race are after Cal. His half brother, Niko, gave up college to keep them on the run for four years, but now the Grendel monsters are back. And Cal is about to learn why they want him. He is the key to unleashing their hell on earth. The fate of the human world will be decided in the fight of Cal’s life…

My Review: So, this is my review of the series up to book seven, which is where I currently am … this series has destroyed me – as in, can’t get any writing done, total nuclear bomb going off in my brain at the thought of it ending, etc., etc.

Let’s face it – I’m a total sucker for the tragic ‘I need to fight my inner evil’ type of character. Those are the books I write, and those are the books I love to read the most. I need to devote an entire fan fiction archive to Cal, and another to Cal and Niko’s relationship – because that’s my other trope trap – the ‘we are brothers and that is sacred’ bond.

In the case of this series, the stories themselves are secondary to the characters and their interactions and development. I’ve heard the series was discontinued and left on a cliffhanger, and that I am to avoid the final book because it ruins an otherwise more or less wrapped-up ending. Any advice would be appreciated. And Rob Thurman, if you’re out there, help! Finish this series for me. Pretty please…

Author Group Runs Fundraiser to
Benefit Border Family Reunification

Auctions feature signed books, writing critiques, exclusive items,
and more with all proceeds going to charity

(Scroll to the bottom of the page for my personal auction link)

Authors for Families is a collective of authors and publishing professionals who raise funds to benefit organizations helping with border family reunification (known commonly as #FamiliesBelongTogether). Their website at www.authorsforfamilies.org offers a range of unique auction items and services from the authors, with all proceeds going to five different organizations including RAICES, CASA, Women’s Refugee Commission, and Kids in Need of Defense. The group has raised over $8,000 since summer 2018, and the January auction features offerings from 39 authors across many genres.

The fundraiser was founded by a group of 2019 debut novelists led by Kris Waldherr, whose debut, THE LOST HISTORY OF DREAMS, launches in April 2019. The group has since snowballed to include established authors, editors, and literary agents and is currently under the direction of a fellow 2019 debut author Sarah J. Sover. “The website was born out of the idea that creatives might be able to contribute to family reunification in a unique and effective way,” says Waldherr after noting a common feeling among the several online debut author communities. “We realized that as published authors, we have items writers and readers may want. Auctioning these as a fundraiser simply seemed like the right thing to do.”

The January auction includes more than fifty listings ranging from rare signed copies of soon-to-publish books to query letter and manuscript critiques as well as more specialized offerings. “We are overwhelmed by the positive reception this initiative has received,” says Sover, who plans to make the auction a quarterly happening. “This is our way of taking action, of showing support to the organizations combating horrific wrongs at our borders. The response from the writing community gives us hope.”

Wicked Fox Review

Wicked Fox (Gumiho #1) by Kat Cho

Eighteen-year-old Gu Miyoung has a secret–she’s a gumiho, a nine-tailed fox who must devour the energy of men in order to survive. Because so few believe in the old tales anymore, and with so many evil men no one will miss, the modern city of Seoul is the perfect place to hide and hunt.

But after feeding one full moon, Miyoung crosses paths with Jihoon, a human boy, being attacked by a goblin deep in the forest. Against her better judgment, she violates the rules of survival to rescue the boy, losing her fox bead–her gumiho soul–in the process.

Jihoon knows Miyoung is more than just a beautiful girl–he saw her nine tails the night she saved his life. His grandmother used to tell him stories of the gumiho, of their power and the danger they pose to humans. He’s drawn to her anyway.

With murderous forces lurking in the background, Miyoung and Jihoon develop a tenuous friendship that blossoms into something more. But when a young shaman tries to reunite Miyoung with her bead, the consequences are disastrous . . . forcing Miyoung to choose between her immortal life and Jihoon’s.

This was a brilliantly vivid journey into the rich world of Korean folktales and mythology. I enjoyed being submerged in the Seoul landscape, rich in detail with its food, traditions, and monsters.

The characters were well fleshed out and three-dimensional, complete with fatal flaws and shimmering imperfections. I was very fortunate to have received an ARC of this book and would recommend it to fans of exotic fantasy and classic monster stories.

Hi, YABCers!

Today we’re excited to celebrate the cover reveal for

THE SIN SOLDIERS (FRAGMENTS #1) by Tracy Auerbach,

releasing July 23, 2019 from The Parliament House!

Before we get to the cover, here’s a note from the author:

Hello YABC! Welcome to the cover reveal of THE SIN SOLDIERS!

THE SIN SOLDIERS is book 1 in the FRAGMENTS trilogy, and I’m so grateful to everyone at The Parliament House for bringing my vision to life! Actually, I didn’t even know this was my vision until Shayne Leighton made my world spring into existence in this brilliant cover image. My talents lie in the realm of writing and stay safely away from the visual arts. I knew that the cover should involve blue, red, and yellow because those are the colors of the compounds the soldiers react to, but that’s about it. So … primary colors … go! Great suggestion, right? But Shayne, thank goodness, had a stunning vision of her own in mind, and I’m thrilled to introduce it to the world today.

Enjoy!

THE SIN SOLDIERS
By: Tracy Auerbach

Release date: July 23, 2019

Publisher: Parliament House

About the Book

Red compound makes them angry. Yellow exhausts them. Blue drives them into a state of ravenous addiction. The thief Kai knows about the chemically controlled soldiers of the Eastern forces and their savage, deadly nature. When a robbery attempt at Club Seven goes wrong, Kai is captured by a handler and his bestial soldier-boy. She wakes up inside the military base with no idea what happened to her twin brother, Dex.

Things go from bad to worse when Kai is started on a drug and training regimen, and forced to take injections of blue compound. The scientists in charge plan to make her into a working soldier who will mine the mysterious power crystals beneath the desert. Kai becomes a victim of the bully Finn, a handsome but nasty soldier whose years on red compound seem to have erased his humanity. Still, she begins to pity the Seven Soldiers, including the monstrous boy who tried to rip her to shreds at the club. They appear to be nothing more than genetically enhanced, drug-controlled teenagers.

On the outside, Dex and his tech-savvy boyfriend try to crack the soldiers’ chemical code to find a weakness that will break the system. But Kai has already been drawn deep into her new world. Strong feelings for the soldiers she’s come to know have started to cloud her judgment. Can she escape and find Dex without becoming a monster herself?
